Mycotoxins are unavoidable, especially in tropical regions like Indonesia. Mycotoxins in feed ingredients can arise in various areas and at different times, such as before and after harvest and during storage. The economic impact caused by mycotoxins is also extensive; this can be related to livestock mortality, decreased livestock performance, diseases both directly caused by these toxins and those that arise as a result, such as vaccine failure and immunosuppression, and the costs incurred for mycotoxin analysis.
In Indonesia, many cases of mycotoxins are caused by Aflatoxin, and the most affected organ is the liver because mycotoxin exposure causes lipid peroxidation in the liver, which then leads to liver tissue damage. Furthermore, liver damage also occurs due to increased liver activity to perform detoxification functions. Additionally, mycotoxin challenges can also lead to a reduction in the physical barrier in the intestinal epithelium or a decrease in trans-epithelial electrical resistance (TEER), thereby increasing susceptibility to disease attacks due to disrupted intestinal mucosa.
The mode of action of toxin binders is to absorb or bind mycotoxins carried from feed and the environment. The use of toxin binders is effective for dealing with certain mycotoxin problems, such as polar toxins like Aflatoxin. However, for other types of non-polar mycotoxins with low molecular weights, such as T2 toxin, the absorption method is considered insufficient because T2 is quickly absorbed by the body before it can be absorbed by the toxin binder, causing toxic effects. Therefore, other solutions are needed to address this problem. The use of certain products is known to provide additional solutions to mycotoxin problems. For example, the use of betaine, which can strengthen the intestinal barrier so that the intestinal barrier can be maintained amid mycotoxin exposure. Betaine can accumulate in liver cells, enabling improved liver health exposed to mycotoxins. It also has antioxidant effects that play a crucial role in reducing oxidative damage to animal cells under various stress conditions, including oxidative stress in the liver due to mycotoxin exposure. The liver becomes a very important organ when exposed to mycotoxins because it is the main organ that processes mycotoxins, detoxifies them, and protects the body from toxic effects.
Formula HP from Jefo Nutrition, distributed by BEC Feed Solutions Indonesia, contains various ingredients, including betaine, which work synergistically to support the stimulation of liver metabolic and detoxification functions. This stable liquid product from Jefo Nutritions can easily be applied to drinking water without causing residues and without any modifications to the feed. Application in drinking water is also considered better for mycotoxin problems compared to application in feed due to the occurrence of reduced appetite. Some reports indicate that the first visual sign that can be observed as a sign of mycotoxin exposure is decreased feed intake. In addition to betaine, Formula HP also contains Vitamins A, D3, and E, carnitine, and various amino acids that are also effective in addressing fatty liver problems in poultry.
Fatty liver is also a common occurrence in poultry, especially breeders and layers. This can be caused by various factors, such as high-energy feed or an imbalance between protein and energy, high maintenance temperatures, and the presence of mycotoxins that cause fat accumulation and liver damage. The effects are also varied, ranging from pale combs, decreased production, to death. Jefo’s internal data (1997) showed a 46% reduction in mortality in chickens with fatty liver treated with Formula HP (see Graph 1). The use of Formula HP from Jefo Nutrition is effective in restoring liver function caused by mycotoxin exposure and can also address fatty liver problems caused by other factors.
